    What is IELTS?

IELTS is an abbreviation of the International English Language Testing System. It’s a method to test how good you are in your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills at four different modules.

The test consists of 4 sections- Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The exam duration is around 3 to 4 hours depending on the modules you take up. Each module will have 25 questions each with a time limit of 30 minutes. Therefore, the total time taken to complete all four modules will be around 2 hours and 45 minutes. It is important to note- BOTH the academic and general examinations include 4 of these sections.

How to do the IELTS examination

IELTS is divided into 4 modules- Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking. Each module has a separate section with its own marking scheme. At last, all these marks are added together to get the final score out of 9.  If you are unable to score full marks then minus scoring (1/3) is also provided like if you get 6 in Listening, 7 in reading, 6 in Writing, and 7 in Speaking then your total score will be (6+7+6+7) 27- (1/3 * 6) = 27-18=9.

A test taker will have to take all four modules if he/she wishes to enter an English-speaking country for further studies or job prospects so everyone must give IELTS even if they have a decent fluency in English.

Let’s study each section in detail

Listening- This part will have 40 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes. Out of these 40 questions, you must attempt to complete all of them because no negative marking is given here so don’t leave any unanswered questions for better chances to get more marks. You can listen to the audio twice or thrice if you are not able to understand in the first attempt.

Reading-This section will have 40 questions with a time limit of 60 minutes. There is no negative marking for incorrect questions so it’s better not to leave any question unanswered but go through all four passages carefully.

Writing- You need to write 2 essay-type answers in this part i.e one on ‘a topic’ and the second on ‘an issue’. Each answer must be a minimum of 150 words long so around 300 words are required here which makes it compulsory to use good vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure to impress the examiner.

Speaking- This module does not have any separate section rather it consists of 6 different tasks that test your ability to communicate effectively in English. Each task has a different time limit ranging from 20 seconds to 2 minutes.

About The New IELTS One Skill Retake Program

can i do ielts after graduation

In March of 2023, the IELTS retake one skill program will begin. This new program is designed to help students who have previously taken the IELTS exam and did not receive the score they were hoping for. The program offers students the opportunity to retake only one skill from the exam, instead of having to retake the entire test. This can be a great way for students to focus on specific areas where they need more practice, and improve their score on future exams.

    IELTS Academic vs General Training

IELTS Academic is designed for test-takers who wish to study at the tertiary level in an English-speaking country or seek professional registration (e.g. medical doctors). IELTS Academic requires candidates to respond to academic tasks in written and spoken formats, demonstrating their ability to work with a language that is accurate, appropriate, and purposeful. Therefore, IELTS Academic focuses on the development of advanced linguistic skills needed when studying an undergraduate or postgraduate program (i.e., mostly reading and writing abilities) rather than on testing vocabulary knowledge (i.e., the focus of the General Training module).

Here are 5 simple tips to write your essay like a fluent english speaker!

    General Training Module

IELTS General Training is designed for test-takers who wish to study at secondary school or work in an English-speaking environment. IELTS General Training requires candidates to respond to questions on familiar topics and everyday life (e.g., where do you live, what is your home like), sharing their experiences and opinions with the examiner. The purpose of this module is to assess whether a candidate can communicate in English across a broad range of situations when they start studying or working in an English-speaking country, without having studied academic English before.

When do I get my IELTS results?

Candidates will receive their test results by phone and email shortly after the test.

People take the IELTS Examination to study, work or migrate to an English-speaking country. For example, Australia and USA require the IELTS Examination as part of their visa criteria. So does Canada. The IELTS General examination is taken by individuals for visa requirements, while the IELTS Academic is taken by those who are intending to attend post-secondary education in an English-speaking country. It is important to note that both modules include all 4 sections which are reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

How To Improve Your IELTS Score

Some students find the IELTS exam challenging. There are a variety of reasons why students may find themselves in this situation. Maybe you didn’t have enough time to prepare for the test, or maybe you didn’t feel confident about your English skills.

It’s never too late to improve your IELTS score. In fact, if you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you may be able to raise your score by several points. Here are a few tips that can help you prepare for the exam.

First, make sure that you have a good study plan in place. Dedicate time each day to studying and practicing English. If you can, try to find a tutor or practice with other students who are preparing for the IELTS exam.

Second, familiarize yourself with the test format and question types. Practice answering sample questions under timed conditions. This will help you become more comfortable with the test format and will help reduce stress on test day.

Finally, stay positive and confident! Believe in yourself and remember that you can do it! With hard work and preparation, you can achieve your desired IELTS score.

To conclude, you are able to take the IELTS exam as many times as you want, but there is a fee for each time you take the exam. Therefore, it’s important that you are prepared and ready when you are taking the IELTS exam to ensure that you can get your desired band.
