Preparing for the IELTS exam is extremely stressful because your ultimate goal is to achieve a high band which can be tricky, especially if you don’t bother looking over the IELTS band descriptors. As an IELTS coach myself, I have done extensive research for you on what areas exactly the examiner will be marking you for.

Lastly, you will understand how the examiner will mark the writing section by understanding the IELTS band score calculator.

This post is all about the IELTS band descriptors for the writing and speaking sections of the IELTS exam that every IELTS test taker MUST know, especially if you want to score a high band.

Understanding IELTS Band Descriptors to Score Band 9:

The IELTS band descriptors are essentially the score you will be given in at the end of each section of the IELTS exam. Furthermore, before taking the exam, it’s important that you understand the different levels of criteria to ensure that you know what the examiner will be marking you for.

If you are looking for tips on scoring a high band in your IELTS writing section, be sure to check out my related posts down below.

    1. IELTS Band Score Writing

The IELTS band descriptors for the writing section will be given to you in an overall mark even though you complete two different tasks in this area. In other words, although you will be given writing task 1 and writing task 2 to complete, you will be presented with one final mark in the IELTS band score writing section.

In addition, because you are given a mark for each section (listening, speaking, reading, writing), the examiner will give you a separate mark for each part. Then, the overall average of the different parts will be calculated.

Remember that it is important that you really take the time to understand the question before answering. The main reason for this is that you want to make sure you are able to write your answer in an order that is sequential and makes the most sense because this is what will help you score high.

Also, be sure that you organize your writing into paragraphs for both sections of the IELTS writing, this is because you want to ensure that your information is structured in a way that is written in a clear and concise manner.

    2. IELTS Band Descriptors Writing Task 1

Furthermore, the IELTS band descriptors writing task 1 will be the score that the examiner will be giving you after you answer the question. However, as I mentioned you will not be given the score right after the test. Rather, this overall score will be given to you after a few days.

Below I have listed the IELTS band descriptors writing task 1 and what particular areas the examiner will be scoring you on. I advise you to review these and really understand each area because this will help you score a high band.

Depending on your requirements of why you need to take the IELTS exam, you may need to score a particular band score to be considered as a “pass” for the organization that is requesting it from you.

In this section, you are provided some example answers that would score you a band 6 vs a band 9 based on the IELTS writing band score calculator.

These answers are important to consider, especially if you want to understand the IELTS band descriptors and how you can score a band 9.

Here is an example answer for the writing task 1:

    Band 6 Band 9
This response does not explain what is happening in the chart, therefore it makes it confusing to understand. The following data provided in the table is unknown, however, what we can see here is that the specific chart shows a drastic increase over time.
The chart shows some interest in people using their bikes to get to work. However, this number went up in 2021 because of the gas prices. It appears in the chart that many individuals prefer to use their bicycles as a method of transportation. Although the chart started with only a minimal number of people using their bikes, this number increased in 2021 due to the increase of gas prices.

As you see here, the answers are written in much more detail for a band 9 answer compared to a band 6. Furthermore, showing the examiner that you are able to write your answer using paraphrasing, synonym language, different sentence structures, and related vocabulary.

Using these kinds of vocabulary is key when you want to show the examiner that you are confident in your writing.

Here is an example for writing task 2:

    Band 6 Band 9
Education is an asset we all need. Especially because you learn how to communicate in school and learn how to interact with others, Having an education is essential, especially because it’s an experience that teaches you so many life lessons. In addition to this, having an opportunity to get an education teaches you how to communicate with others.
People often think you can only live a happy life if you have money. However, I don’t think that is true because money isn’t the only source to happiness. Money is an essential part of life to live comfortably, however, I don’t believe being wealthy will be the ultimate source of happiness. In fact, being more healthy is more important than being wealthy because if an individual is ill, he cannot enjoy his life.

As you can see here, once again the answers for band 6 vs band 9 are completely different. The band 9 answers provide much more detail than the band 6.

    5. Finally, now that you have really understood the band descriptors in detail, it’s important that you practice these in your writing task 1 and writing task 2 answers. Being able to implement these into your answers will show the examiner your abilities to be able to speak English.
