IELTS Writing Task 1 – Academic

The IELTS writing task 1 for the academic exam includes an image with a graph or diagram that provides a set of data. You will have to take the information from IELTS writing task 1 and write a 150-word minimum description of what the image is showing. However, it’s important that you don’t state the obvious in task 1 writing IELTS, rather you should try to write about specific details.

If you are not sure how to structure your answer, then check out my article titled IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic – Tips and Tricks.

It’s important that your writing task 1 answer is written in a manner that is organized so the examiner comprehends the information you are trying to discuss. Also, being able to manage your time is essential since you have an hour to complete both tasks.

Next, we will look at some IELTS writing sample questions that you may get in your IELTS writing task 1 academic test.

    IELTS Writing Sample Questions

Here is one of the IELTS writing sample questions we will be discussing today. Have a look at the bar chart question I completed a band 9 answer for:

IELTS Academic Writing Samples For The Above Question:

Take a look at one of the IELTS academic writing samples for the question above:

The bar chart shows represent the average number of minutes per day men and women in Europe spend on housekeeping jobs around their accommodations. The trend suggests that women tend to complete more household chores in comparison to men.

In general, men are shown to prefer gardening compared to other tasks such as cleaning the house. This is quite evident since women spend most of their time in the kitchen, cooking. Meanwhile, maintenance work is a job women spend the least amount of time doing.

According to the information shown, men barely spend an hour on household tasks daily, whereas women spend slightly more than an hour. In fact, women spend more than twice as much time in the kitchen at 65 minutes daily. Meanwhile, men don’t even spend more than 30 minutes on kitchen responsibilities. Also, women put in more than twice as much as men when it comes to caring for their children.

On the other hand, men are more active in the garden, where they spend twice as much time as women. In addition to this, men spend approximately 20 minutes more than women do on maintenance and odd jobs around the house. Finally, there is a significant difference between women and men when it comes to laundry and clothes ironing. Women are seen spending more than 30 minutes daily, whereas men don’t even spend 10 minutes. (230 words)

    IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample

This IELTS writing task 1 sample above would score you a band 9. Thus, look at how the format is written. Each paragraph includes transition words and each section is clear and concise. Also, since the minimum word limit is 150 words, I recommend that you go for a maximum of 230 words. The reason why I recommend a maximum of 230 words is because you should complete writing task 1 within 20 minutes.

Can You Lie in IELTS Writing?

Although this question may sound a bit bizarre, many students have asked me if they always have to tell the truth in their IELTS writing section. My advice is that you are not required to speak the truth if you have an idea you want to write about. If you think the idea will help you score a better mark, then I highly recommend you write about that. Besides, no one will ever know 🙂

    Before Handing in Your Essay

    • Were you able to answer the essay question clearly and directly?
      • Does the order of your sentences make sense throughout your paragraph?
      • Will the reader understand what you are trying to express?
      • Are there any grammar errors in your paragraphs?
      • Are you writing an essay that’s at a high standard?

Evidently, asking yourself these questions will help you score a high band in your writing task 2 essay.
