Having to answer questions where you may be unfamiliar with the topic can be nerve-wracking, especially when the examiner is looking at you, while you are trying not to break a sweat! As an IELTS coach myself, I will give you the IELTS speaking topics with answers that will help you score a band 9.
This article will discuss the most recent IELTS speaking topics 2022 with answers you should use to get an idea on how you should answer your questions in the IELTS speaking test.
I will also go through the different parts of the IELTS speaking section since there are 3 different sections in the IELTS speaking exam.

Most Challenging IELTS Speaking Topics With Answers
IELTS Speaking Part 1
In the IELTS speaking part 1 section, you will be asked 3 questions that will ask you about your accommodations, family size, whether you work or study. While these questions may vary, the examiner is just looking to get to know you and your situation in the first part.
How do I answer IELTS speaking part 1?
I have put together a list of recent IELTS speaking topics with answers 2022 that have been reported by many of my students who recently took the exam. I don’t recommend that you memorize these answers, however, you should try to learn what sort of information you should include in your answers.
IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions and Answers 2022
When you are answering your IELTS speaking part 1 questions, it’s important that your answers come out naturally and you respond using the vocabulary within the given context. This will show the examiner that you are confident during the conversation and that you are able to speak at the level of a native speaker.
Do you drink coffee or tea?
I used to pull a lot of all-nighters during my university days, that’s when my love for coffee grew because it helped me stay up at night. So I definitely prefer coffee over tea.
Do you usually serve coffee or tea to your guests?
I usually ask my visitors what they prefer because some people only like coffee in the morning while other people like tea during the afternoon. That’s why I think it’s important to ask your guests which they prefer so you can make sure you serve them the correct hot beverage.
Do you prefer morning or evening hot drinks?
I actually really love my coffee in the morning because it helps me wake up, however, I always appreciate my cup of tea after my kids are sleeping in the evenings because it helps me wind down and relax for the rest of the night. So I’d say I definitely prefer both drinks.
Something I would like to note with the question below is that if you are given a question such as “Have you ever experienced a bad haircut?” remember that you don’t always have to tell the truth in your answer. In other words, if you have never had a bad haircut, then be sure to just make up a story because this will help you get a better band in your IELTS speaking test. There is no way the examiner will know that you told the truth or not, so just remember this for these types of questions.
Have you ever had a bad haircut?
Experiencing a bad haircut has always been a nightmare of mine, unfortunately, I remember getting a bad haircut at a salon during my high school days. I asked the stylist to cut my hair above my shoulders, but she didn’t listen to my instructions and ended up cutting it to my chin. This was the worst experience ever and I was so embarrassed.
IELTS Speaking Part 2 Cue Cards
For the IELTS speaking part 2 question, you will be given a cue card of 2-3 questions that can relate to anything within the lines of shopping, family, school, or about an experience you had of something.
When the examiner hands you the IELTS speaking part 2 questions, you will have one minute to prepare for your answers before responding to the examiner. This preparation time is VERY IMPORTANT. I highly recommend that you take this time to write some notes on how you will start your discussion and what you will say. IELTS Speaking Part 2 With Answers
When you are given 1 minute to prepare for your answers for part 2, you must ensure that you talk about your topic for a full two minutes. That’s why it’s very important that you prepare your answer to be able to talk for that amount of time.
Describe a present or gift or present someone in your family gave you that you really liked
You should say:
- What kind of present it was
- Who gave it to you
- Why you were given it
- Explain why you liked it
- On my 10th wedding anniversary, I was given the most thoughtful gift, especially because it made me remember the first day I met my husband.My husband surprised me with the same roses he had given me on our first date, I had no idea that he actually managed to dry the roses and put them in a glass bottle and gave them to me as a gift.This was probably the most sentimental gift I ever received because it was such a memorable day in my life.
Describe your favorite teacher from school
You should say:
- What school he/she taught at
- What he/she looked like
- What subject he/ she taught you
- Explain why you remember this teacher so well
- I started at John Fleming school at grade 1, but when I was in 6th grade I had a teacher I adored. I had him during 3rd period everyday after gym class.
- Mr Brown was teacher who was very slim and tall. He honestly used to tower over me when I stood next to him, especially because he was probably 6’5 and I am only 5’2.
- He was actually my history teacher. In fact, I always used to hate history class but because he had such great story telling skills he made the class so interesting.
- I’d definitely say the reason why I remember him so well is because he was such a comedian and made history class entertaining which barely happens these days.
Describe an old person that you know. You should say:
- What your relationship is to this person
- How often you see them
- What people think of this person
- Explain why you like them
- When I think of a senior whom I know, I think of the gentleman who is a cleaner in my condominium building. Although he doesn’t know any English, we always manage to communicate and his kindness shines through his actions. Because of the language barrier we have, unfortunately I cannot talk to him in English.
- When he sees my kids everyday, he always ends up giving them a hug because my two year old loves seeing him, especially because the man makes funny faces and makes my son laugh.
It’s not only my kids who love seeing the cleaner, but everyone in the building respects him and appreciates his hard work. We usually all get together and gift him something big for Christmas to show him our appreciation.
- I respect this cleaner because of his old age but also I remember my own father when I see him, especially because they seem to be within the same age range.
IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Questions and Answers
- Do you think mothers or fathers play a major role in the family? How?
I definitely think that when a family has a good foundation and a mother and father play their individual roles as a team, this builds a strong family. It’s certainly true that children look up to both parents, so I definitely think both roles
- What are the responsibilities of a father on his children?
As I mentioned earlier, both mother and father have roles to play toward their children. Fathers equally play the same role as a mother when it comes to caring for their children and putting them to bed.
- Do you think families should treat girls and boys the same or different?
There should definitely be no difference in the way boys and girls are treated in the household. In fact, girls should be taught the different things society teaches us that only boys do such as changing a flat tire, and vice versa.
Conclusion
To sum up, the IELTS speaking section has three different parts that have different requirements. It’s important that we understand what each part includes and what types of questions the examiner will ask you.
