Outlining your Essay
Before you see the IELTS exam sample, I highly recommend that you become familiar with the concept of outlining your agree disagree essay before writing it. Moreover, if you’ve watched my other videos or read my previous articles, you may be familiar with how much I find it important in outlining your essay before you start writing the entire thing. This is really important because it not only helps you save time but also allows you to make sure that you answer every part of the question that the examiner is looking for. If you want to learn more about how to outline your essay, be sure to check out my article titled IELTS agree disagree essay – Writing Task 2.
Essentially, an outline will be a quick brainstorm of the ideas you will be discussing in each body paragraph. This will help you gather your thoughts together before you start writing the essay. Here is a breakdown of how your outline should look:
Body Paragraph 1. Gateways to knowledge and culture
a.) Libraries offer more resources other than books
b.) Support literacy and education
Body Paragraph 2. Help build communities
a.) Information provided for community building
b.) Centre that helps newcomers
3. The IELTS General Test Format For Agree Disagree Essays
The outline that is included in any IELTS general test format for agree-disagree questions is a brainstorm of the ideas each paragraph will cover. For instance, in the first body paragraph, the main idea of my entire paragraph will be about libraries being a gateway to knowledge and culture. Then, I will back up this with evidence by mentioning that libraries offer more resources other than books. Next, I will say that libraries also support literacy and education.
The main idea of my second body paragraph will be that libraries help build communities. Then, I will back up this statement by saying that libraries provide information for community building, as well as it’s a center that helps newcomers.

If you are not sure how to structure your agree disagree essay question, I highly recommend you to watch my video down here:
Agree or Disagree essay introduction
Your introduction should not be more than 3 sentences. A sentence means when you have a cluster of words that finishes off with a period (.) It is important that you follow this structure so you are able to include everything from your outline into your essay.
Now, let’s take a look at how you should write your agree or disagree essay introduction:
Having access to libraries has made it easy for readers and other community members to access important information happening within their neighborhood. While many publishers have been suffering from profit loss of books being available online for free, libraries and bookstores are a learning space for many. This essay examines the reasons why libraries are essential to every member of a community.
Looking at this introduction, you can see that the sentences all relate back to the original outline of what was to be discussed. Also, notice that nothing is unrelated to the topic, as this is key in scoring a band 9. Additionally, you need to ensure that your essay is clearly written about what the question is asking you.
4. IELTS Writing Format Academic and General
One thing I would like to mention is that you may see the agree-disagree question in both exams, therefore this can be used for both the IELTS writing format academic and general exam.
Formatting your first body paragraph
In the outline, the main idea is to discuss libraries being a gateway to knowledge and culture. Also, the evidence of this is that libraries being a facility that caters to more things other than books, as well as it being a hub that enormously believes in supporting literacy and education.
Your first body paragraph should be no more than 5 sentences. This is important because you want to ensure that you are able to get your points across as clear as possible. It doesn’t mean that the more you write, the higher band score you will get.
Second Body Paragraph
Now take a look at the first body paragraph:
Individuals may argue that libraries are outdated and that they should no longer exist. However, libraries are gateways to knowledge and culture. Having said that, libraries offer more resources for community members such as access to computers, printers, and many online resources. In addition to this, libraries support communities with adult literacy programs and education. In fact, the educational programs cater to both young and old since the library offers assistance with homework and assists seniors with computer literacy. While libraries are a benefit to residents, they have also helped establish communities.
Clearly, you can see that this paragraph backs up the main idea of what was to be discussed based on the outline. Having a solid outline will be a great guide for you to follow to help you in your IELTS exam. Truthfully, if you follow this guide and get used to outline your essay, this will help you score a high band.
Formatting your Second Body Paragraph
The outline of the second body paragraph mentions that libraries assist in building communities and provide resources for community building. Next, the outline states that libraries help newcomers settle into the country.
Remember that your second body paragraph should not be longer than 5 sentences as well. This will help you with formatting each paragraph. Also, remember that a good sentence has an average of 15-20 words before closing it off with a period. Be sure to follow these rules to help score a band 9 in your IELTS exam!
Second body paragraph
Communities that offer their members in the neighborhood to connect through different programs are a great way to establish a safe and accessible environment. In addition to this, these opportunities are always free which makes it easily available for everyone. Libraries definitely are an asset to every community, especially because they play a fundamental role in society. Every member of the neighborhood is important, especially newcomers who arrive in the country. Indeed, when they arrive they are unaware of where to get started. For this reason, libraries offer citizenship test help, English language classes, resources on immigration, and how to connect with others in the community.
As you can see, the second body paragraph is written to be very concise and includes the exact reasons why libraries are a location for community building. Evidently, being able to include synonym language and vocabulary that relates to the essay question is also a major bonus in scoring a high band in your IELTS test.
Formatting your conclusion
Your conclusion should sum up your main ideas of each paragraph in no more than 3 sentences. Being able to write a conclusion giving the reader a general overview of the essay is important. Also, for the agree-disagree question you are not asked for your opinion so there is no need to include that. However, keep note that different question types for writing task 2 may ask you for your opinion. If you are not sure, have a look at my downloadable PDF titled IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Structure where I have included which question types have different requirements, and the structure you should follow.
Overall, libraries offer community members great educational resources and offer other programs that give citizens the opportunity for lifelong education for free. This is extremely important since it helps build communities and keeps families together. Having said that, newcomers depend on libraries because they are guided to the proper resources that will help them fit into society.
As you can see here, the conclusion sums up the main points that are discussed in the essay. Also, another important thing you should note is that you need to ensure that your entire essay is written in the same tense form throughout the ENTIRE essay. This is a MUST, because this is something that the examiner is looking for.
